Bell, Mervyn...
When we speak about Dundela FC, we just have to mention...Mervyn Bell. The two have possibly the longest
(manager-club) union in European football. From way back in 1973 Dundela have been in the very capable managerial hands of Mervyn. He has steered the Duns' to 27 trophies during
his 28 years at the helm. This includes 9 of the 10 Championships Dundela have won; 7 Intermediate Cup wins and 6 Steel & Sons Cup victories. His allegiance to Dundela goes
back even further - to 1966. Previous to joining Dundela, in 1966, Mervyn had played for both Distillery and Portadown. And in his playing career was classed as a very skillful
centre-half and has always been held in the highest esteem throughout footballing circles in Ireland. His thirst for success and trophies is still unquenchable even after all his
years with the club. He once told a journalist, "I don't play golf or any other sports, football is my only outlet". In answer to a recent journalists' question as to
why, would Mervyn not like Dundela up there alongside the Glens' in the premiership? He responded by saying...that the east of the city is too small for both clubs to survive, let
alone thrive.
The simple facts of the matter are...promotion for Dundela would not only mean, no more Steel & Sons, Smirnoff and Intermediate Cup runs. It could also realistically mean
financial ruin.
We only have to look at some of the first division attendances for proof. Long may you reign, Mervyn!
